Currently, there are three major types of HDTVs available: plasma, LCD and DLP.
DLP
Looking first at the cheaper DLP. DLP stands for Digital Light Processing, and is actually a rear projection TV. Audiophiles might choose to spend more money on a hi-tech surround sound system, others may choose to open a larger percentage of the budget for the designer. But no matter which option you choose, be comfortable knowing that one of the options available to you are much higher than what was available even in the recent past.
